So, do you think you know what is morally right? Is it okay to lie? How about just a small lie or a lie that really helps someone. How about having an affair? What about lusting over someone or something? How about abortion? Here’s one in the headlines, what about same sex marriage?
So what do you think?
What you will find is that some people agree with these things and others do not. No matter what the subject you are always going to get two sides that disagree. Which side is right? That is the question. There really cannot be a correct answer when it comes to humans. Morality begins with the character of God. There is no other foundation for it. If humans try to set the moral law it will not work! In our society today everyone is leaning toward whatever works for you as long as it does not hurt anyone else. This also will not work. The only one who can make moral law is God!
He has done just that with the Ten Commandments.
- You shall have no other gods before me
- You shall not make for yourself a false idol
- You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain
- Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy
- Honor your father and your mother
- You shall not murder
- You shall not commit adultery
- You shall not steal
- You shall not lie
- You shall not covet
On the Sermon on the Mount Jesus takes this even further and tells us that “You have heard that it was said to those of old, “you shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.” But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. Then again Jesus states “You have heard that it was said to those of old, “You shall not commit adultery.” But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for here has already committed adultery with here in his heart. Wow, Jesus told us it is not even just our physical responses but our thoughts also!
Yes, lying, stealing, lust, living together, wanting what others have these are all sin. No human can overcome this, and that is why you need Jesus Christ as your savior.
Morality, there is only the morality of God that is true and correct. The only morality we can count on and know that it is right! Do not rely on human thought, trust in God for your moral compass and all things, “He will never leave you or forsake you”.
The God we are talking about is not any old god such as humans have dreamed up over the centuries. It is the God who created this universe, who has made himself known through His dealings with chosen people through history and supremely through coming Himself into our human existence in the person of Jesus Christ.
This God that Christians believe in is, first of all, personal. In other words, He is not just some impersonal “force” behind the universe.
Get to know Jesus! Have a personal relationship with God Almighty. It is politically incorrect to say that Jesus Christ is the only way, the only truth, and the only life, but it is the TRUTH. Only His truth changes lives and unlocks the beauty of our full worth as men and women who ae made in His image.
