Questions & Answers
Here we will take a look at eleven of the most common objections and questions about Christianity. We will keep the answers as brief as possible, because some could go on for a long explanation. So, if you wish to get a longer explanation feel free to send in your questions and we may post those also or just send you a personal email with a longer answer!
1. Who made God?
The first thing to realize is God is beyond our human comprehension. But now let’s look at the question of who made God? The simplest way to answer this is to ask a question. Does space have an end? Of course it doen’t. If it did then the question would have to be asked of what is at the end of space or simply put what is on the other side? This can really strain our brains but we must believe (have faith) that space has no beginning and no end. The same applies to God. He has no beginning and no end. He is eternal.
2. Since there is so much suffering, that proves there is no loving God.
This excuse is used by many to reject the existence of God or to say that God is not good. When in fact it is the main reason we should accept Him. The Word of God tells us exactly why there is suffering. Of course then someone will say why should I believe the Bible. Look at our section on the Bible and if you take a few minutes of study with an open heart you will see that this is no ordinary book and it is a supernatural testament of God. The Bible tells us that we (humans) specifically Adam and Eve brought the disease of sin into the world when they disobeyed God. Sin is like a disease and was passed on to all of us. The whole world shows us unspeakable suffering and pain. But instead of believing God’s explanation and asking Him to forgive us and repenting we choose sin, because yes sin does bring pleasure, for a time. Thus, we intensify our pain, both in this life and in the life to come.
3. If God is good, why hasn’t He dealt with evil?
He has, “God sent His Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross in order to solve the problem of evil. Christ atoned for evil and secured the eventual removal of all evil form the earth. One day evil will be quarantined in one spot called hell. Then there will be a perfect world devoid of all evil. If God declared that all evil would, at this moment, cease to exist, you and I and all of humanity would go up in a puff of smoke. Divine judgment demands that sin be punished.” Ron Meade
So, why does God allow evil men and women to live? Should He judge murderers and rapists now? What about thieves and liars, adulterers, fornicators, those who lust, and those who hate? If God judged evil today, all unconverted men and women would perish under His wrath. Thank God that he does not wanted any to perish, and so is showing patience.
4. It’s intolerant to say that Jesus is the only way to God!
Jesus is the one who said it! If you are claiming to be a Christian and you say that there are other ways to Heaven then you are not a Christian. In one statement Jesus dismisses all other religions of being a way to forgive sin and enter Heaven. His statement agrees with other Scriptures; “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12), and “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5).
5. Will people who have never heard about Jesus go to hell?
First, no one will go to hell because they haven’t heard of Jesus Christ. They will go to hell for murder, rape, adultery, lust, theft, lying, etc. Sin is not failing to hear the gospel. Rather, sin is a transgression of the Law (1 John 3:4). If you are concerned about those who may not yet have heard the Gospel then go out and spread the word as many Christians are doing now and have been doing for many years.
6. The Bible has changed down through the ages and was written by men.
No, it hasn’t. That was a good argument for people prior to 1947, but in 1947 the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. These were copies of large portions of the Old Testament, a thousand years older than any other existing copies. As these ancient copies have been studied, it has been revealed that the Bible has not changed in content as many people wanted to claim. In ancient times, books were copied by hand and the originals would decay over time, therefore, today ancient books are available only because people copied them. Let’s take the original writings of Julius Caesar, they are no longer around, we know only of them because of the copies we have. Only 10 copies still exist and they were made 1,000 years after he died. As another example only 600 copies of Homer’s The Iliad exist and they were made 1,300 years after the originals. No other book has as many copies of ancient manuscripts as the Bible. There are over 24,000 copies of New Testament manuscripts, some written only 35 years after the writer’s death.
Did men write the Bible? Of course. The men that wrote the bible were instruments of God just as a pen is an instrument to use when we write. Proof that the Bible is supernatural can be seen with a quick study of its prophecies. Look at the continuity of the Bible, if you had 10 people today from the same area with the same background and the same age and spoke the same language and made the same amount of money and then had each of them write on just one controversial subject you would get 10 very different stories, but the Bible stands alone. It was written over a period of 1,600 years by more than 40 writers of which some were fishermen, some were politicians, others were generals, kings, shepherds and historians. They were from three different continents, and wrote in three different languages. They wrote on hundreds of controversial subjects yet they wrote in complete agreement and harmony. They wrote in prisons, in temples and on beaches, in peace time and war. Yet the words sound like they came from the same source, they did, God!
7. Because Jesus died on the cross, we are all forgiven of every sin.
The forgiveness that is in Jesus Christ is conditional upon “repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:21). It is a gift that God offers to everyone, but individuals must receive it by repenting and trusting in Christ, or they will remain dead in their sins.
8. I don’t mind going to hell. All my friends will be there.
If God sees a man rape and murder your sister or mother, do you think He should just look the other way or should he punish the man? Of course He should punish that man. Of course God should punish murderers and rapists. But God is so good that He will also punish thieves, liars, adulterers, fornicators, and blasphemers. He will even punish those who desired to murder and rape (our thoughts). If we hate, to God it is the same as murder, if we lust it is the same as adultery. The Bible says that God will punish these people and the place of punishment is –Gods prison– a place called hell.
Jesus said that it is a place of torment, where the worm never dies and the fire is never quenched (Mark 9:43-44).
Imagine how terrible it would be if God withdrew all the things we hold dear, friendship, love, color, light, peace, joy, laughter and happiness. That is just a taste of what hell is.
This life is the closest thing to hell that the Christian will experience, and it is the closest thing to Heaven that the unsaved person will ever experience.
9. God is unfair in that Hitler and a dear old lady (who never accepted Jesus) will both go to hell.
Sinners often accuse God of being unjust, because they assume that everyone will receive the same punishment in hell. God’s judgment, however, will be according to righteousness (Acts 17:31). This verse shows that there will be degrees of punishment. Also see Mark 6:11.
10. If God gives me some sign, then I will believe.
The unsaved person often wants a “sign” from God. In spite of the testimony of creation, their conscience, the Bible, and the Christian. (take the test)
11. My God would never create hell.
Those who say that are right: their “god” would never create hell, because he couldn’t. He doesn’t exist. He is a figment of their imagination, a god they have made up to allow themselves to sin as they choose and have no judgment. This is called “idolatry”. Idolaters will not inherit the kingdom of God. The one true God, however, could and did create hell for those who reject His mercy.
This Week’s Lesson
Using Your Armor
Today we’re going to talk about something that is really directed to a true Christian. In today’s world with so many things going on from the hectic life style of our normal lives, our jobs, kids, and families overall not to mention the threat of war and natural disaster all over the world, we need to be strong!
That is easier said than done. Why is it that so many normal people need medication or counseling help just to cope with today’s world? It is because we are not equipped on our own to deal with these situations, which I might add are our own doing. Not necessarily as individuals but as the human race.
So if we are not equipped to handle these things then what do we do, just give up? No!
Although we as humans really are not able to deal with this life in many aspects, God has given us His Holy Spirit to help strengthen us and lead us through these times. No different than we cannot resist sin on our own, but only through the power of the Holy Spirit. Now you’re saying so why are all these things happening if we all have the Holy Spirit to lead us through? Well, we all do not have the Holy Spirit! You must be a Born Again Christian to have the Holy Spirit within you. Now let me clarify a few things about this, any true Christian is Born Again, but just because someone calls themselves a Christian does not mean they are a true Christian or Born Again. Okay, bottom line is if you are a true Christian then you are Born Again and all true Christians have the Holy Spirit living within them.
The Holy Spirit will provide strength to you so you are able to endure this world with a positive outlook. If you are fearful of the things that are going on in this world you need to question yourself as to whether you are Born Again (Saved) or not. This may be tough but you are instructed to self evaluate yourself on a regular basis, to make sure you are on the correct path. Just because you said a prayer one time, or your family was Christian or you even go to church does not mean you are “Saved”. Look through this site and you will find these answers, I encourage you to do so, it is a very important quest.
So now let’s get back on subject. The Holy Spirit gives us the ability to endure this life’s trials and tribulations. Not only has God given us the Holy Spirit to help us but we also find that God has given us more to help us with this battle. What else has He given us? The Armor of God!
Let’s look at the book of Ephesians in the Bible to get some answers and instructions. First let us look at Ephesians 6:11-12 “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms”.
We can see that our true enemy is not other people but Satan and his dark forces.
We are told to put on the whole armor of God. So what is this armor. It is spiritual! Let’s look at each piece of armor. For that answer we look at Ephesians 6:14-18 “Stand therefore, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, the girdle of truth, and having shod your feet with the shoes of peace; besides all these take the shield of faith, with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”.
This is your armor that God has provided you to help your battle with the darkness and sin of this world. Yes, you are under attack by Satan and his forces every day, even though you may not realize it! If you are not “Saved” then those forces are your allies and they are whispering things in your ear all the time to get you to do what is wrong in God’s eyes, committing sin and therefore breaking the Law of God.
Don’t be misled, Satan does not care about you in the least, his only purpose is your demise by your own choices, and the end result for you is hell. Why does Satan want this? Simple, because your self demise will cause God great pain. He loves you!
So we have established why we need the Armor of God and that it can help us in our daily lives but how do we put it on?
Remember we must put on our armor daily!
First let us put on the Girdle of Truth! You must stand firm in the truth of God’s Word. What is that? The Bible, so you must read and study the Bible everyday without missing a day here and there. When you start to do this and begin learning the Word of God then you can stand firm in the truth of God’s Word. What is that truth? It is that Jesus died for you on the cross, was buried and rose again, there by defeating death and paying for your sin.
Put on the Breastplate of Righteousness! This is your life style. Make sure you are living a righteous life, you will find what that is in the Bible. For the most basic idea it is living for God, you tell the truth, you help people even when you are not asked, you do not live the wild night life. You do not swear or take advantage of people, you live the way God wants you to and you serve and honor Him daily. By doing this you will guard your heart from evil and will flee from temptation and in so doing your heart can remain pure and holy, protected under the blood of Jesus Christ. Do not embrace the things of this world, money, success, fame, power, self indulgence etc., for they are not what is important to God.
Put on the Shoes of Peace! Stand and be an example to others and live in the Good News of the Gospel. What is that Good News? It is that you have eternal life through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ! This is the most joyous thing you could ever be given, so let that “Good News” shine through you and be a light to all you encounter.
Take the Shield of Faith! The shield of faith is simply that, your faith in Jesus Christ! If you have that then you know that nothing can defeat you, and you will be ready for Satan’s attacks on you, which will come and may come often. What do you do, you pray and have faith that “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). So when you feel Satan whispering doubt, denial and deceit at you, you know what to do.
Put on the Helmet of Salvation! When things get tough as they usually do, you have your Helmet of Salvation. This is just that you know that no matter how bad things get you are saved! If you do not know this then you need to search this site and find how you can be sure. When you have salvation you can keep your mind focused on God and not on the things of this world.
Take the Sword of the Spirit! The Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God, the Bible. You need to learn how to use it so you can expose the tempting words of Satan. Memorize passages in the Bible, stories, verses, as much as you can, the more you do this the better you will be at using the Sword of the Spirit!
There you have it, you have just put on the whole armor of God.
You must do this daily, don’t take this lightly, it is of the utmost importance.
I’m going to close by giving you a tool that can help you with this each and every day, and I encourage you to use this every day. Your armor will help keep you strong.
Here is a prayer you can use each day when you get up. This is a prayer from David Jeremiah and Turning Point Ministries called the:
Your warrior prepares for battle.
Today I claim victory over Satan by putting on
the whole armor of God!
I put on the Girdle of Truth!
May I stand firm in the truth of Your Word
so I will not be a victim of Satan’s lies.
I put on the Breastplate of Righteousness!
May it guard my heart from evil
so I will remain pure and holy,
protected under the blood of Jesus Christ.
I put on the Shoes of Peace!
May I stand firm in the Good News of the Gospel
so Your peace will shine through me
and be a light to all I encounter.
I take the Shield of Faith!
May I be ready for Satan’s fiery darts of
doubt, denial and deceit
so I will not be vulnerable to spiritual defeat.
I put on the Helmet of Salvation!
May I keep my mind focused on You
so Satan will not have a stronghold on my thoughts.
I take the Sword of the Spirit!
May the two-edged sword of Your Word
be ready in my hands
so I can expose the temping words of Satan.
By faith your warrior has put on
the whole armor of God!
I am prepared to live this day
in spiritual victory!
