There are a few basic questions we will address and answer to clear up some assumptions about Jesus. In doing so we will prove His existence and His divinity as God.
First question that people try to state is that Jesus really didn’t exist? What does the record show?
In fact there is more evidence for not just Jesus’ existence but for His resurrection than there is of Julius Cesar’s existence.
Jesus was a great moral teacher not God.
Jesus left no option when He spoke, He clearly made the statements many times that He is God. Statement were made by the apostles saying He was and is God, He accepted worship from people, knowing that only God is to be worshiped. “I am the way the turth and the life, no man comes to the Father but by me” (John 14:6), see Matthew 7:21-24 in these saying Jesus speaks as God saying “Many will say to me”, “then will I profess to them”, these are statement of Judgment Day. While talking to the Pharisees Jesus said “before Abraham was I AM” (John 8:58), this referred back to God’s statement to Moses about who Moses should tell the Jews who sent him. He not only existed before Abraham, He existed before the creation of the world (John 1:1-3). Again when the soldiers came to take Jesus away and Jesus asked them who they were after and they said Jesus, Jesus replyed I AM, as soon as He said this they went backward, and fell to the ground”. (John 18:6). There are many more such statement Jesus made and by making these statements He either was a liar, or crazy which then His teaching would be dismissed, or He was exactly who He said He was, God! Jesus declared that He was with the Father before the world came into existence, Hebrews 7:3 tells us that He had no beginning. Throughout the Gospels Jesus accepts worship, if Jesus was not God, He would have been breaking the Law of God by receiving their worship.
Let’s not forget about the miracles he performed!
When talking about Jesus we need to first address the Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. One God. Three persons. Although Trinity does not appear in the Bible the concept of One who is three vary clearly does.
To say that God exists as three persons or Trinity does not mean that there are three Gods. But it also does not mean that God makes Himself as one of the three on different occasions. No, He (God) is all three at the same time yet three persons. The concept is very deep and complex. If you are having trouble wrapping your mind around it don’t feel alone, many people have difficulty with this. Until you can study and mature as a Christian this may be one of those things you may need to take on faith until the Holy Spirit reveals the truth to you.
To know Jesus is to know God. Jesus alone was the perfect image of God. The Bible and Jesus himself state this on different occasions: Christ, who is the image of God; He is the image of the invisible God; He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature; Whoever sees me (Jesus) sees him who sent me; Whoever has seen me (Jesus) has seen the Father.
Jesus is universally recognized as a great moral example, insightful teacher, defender of the poor. Was Jesus fully God? That is the question that divides Christianity from all other religions. Jehovah’s Witnesses say that “Jesus never claimed to be God”. All they need to do is look at a Bible that has not been altered as theirs has been and they would see the numerous times Jesus said He was God. From Baha’ to Buddhism to Christian Science, none of the religions dispute that Jesus existed they simply claim He was a great teacher. But, there are numerous incontrovertible reasons to believe that Jesus Christ was and is fully God.
God the Father said Jesus was God: Hebrews 1:8 God says “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.” That is God the Father calling Jesus God!
Demons said Jesus was God. In Luke 4:41 Jesus would not allow them (the demons) to speak, because they knew he was the Christ.
Jesus said he was God. No founder of any major world religion has ever said he was God. Except Jesus, who clearly, repeatedly and emphatically said he was God.
By saying that he came down from heaven, Jesus declared that he was eternally God in heaven before his incarnation on earth. By saying he was the only way to heaven, Jesus claimed to be both God and savior. Jesus refused to be considered merely a good moral teacher and instead claimed to be God alone.
Let’s look at some of the prophesies of Jesus’ first coming from the Old Testament where God states clearly that these prophesies and their fulfillments are His signature upon the Bible and His verification that the Bible is truly His Word. Look at Isaiah 41:22-23 NIV. this is Gods challenge to anyone, false prophets, false religions. So far there has been no credible response to His challenge.
There are hundreds of prophecies in the Old Testament where God promised that He would send a Messiah to save humanity from their sins. Let’s look at some of these regarding Jesus and the mathematical probability of these occurring by chance.
1. The promised Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. Micah 5:2
Fulfilled Matthew 2:1, Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
Probability: 1 in 200
2. The Messiah would be preceded by a messenger. Isaiah 40:3
Fulfilled Matthew 3:1-2, John the Baptist
Probability: 1 in 20
3. The Messiah would enter Jerusalem on a colt. Zechariah 9:9
Fulfilled Luke 19:35-37, Jesus entered Jerusalem on the colt of an ass.
Probability: 1 in 50
4. The Messiah would be betrayed by a friend. Psalm 41:9
Fulfilled Matthew 26:47-50, Jesus was betrayed by Judas.
Probability: 1 in 10
5. The Messiah would have His hands and feet pierced. Psalm 22:16
Fulfilled Luke 23:33, Jesus had His hands and feet pierced when He was crucified.
Probability: 1 in 100
6. The Messiah would be betrayed for thirty pieces of silver. Zechariah 11:12
Fulfilled Matthew 26:15, Jesus was betrayed by Judas for thirty pieces of silver.
Probability: 1 in 100
I’m going to stop there, simply because there are hundreds of these prophesies and I think these 6 will give you the idea. Now let’s look at the mathematics. The basics of statistical theory shows that if one event has the chance occurrence of 1 in 5 and another has the chance of 1 in 10 then the probability of both events being fulfilled in sequence is five multiplied by ten. Thus, the chance of both events occurring is one in fifty. So you get the general idea of how to figure these. Of course some people are not going to agree with the odds I have placed on each of these but whether you think they are too high or too low, feel free to place your own odds, just be reasonable with your own estimates and recalculate the mathematical probabilities that these prophecies were fulfilled by chance alone. Regardless how you do it you will see that the mathematical probabilities are staggering.
The combined Probability of just these 6 prophesies is:
200 x 20 x 50 x 10 x 100 x 100 = One chance in 20,000,000,000
Remember there are hundreds and 48 that are very specific.
Don’t forget these prophesies were made hundreds and some even thousands of years before they were fulfilled. One example is #5 where hands and feet are pierced, this prediction in the Psalms was made more than five hundred years before the Roman Empire invented crucifixion.
In the Book of Daniel, the Bible prophesied the coming of the one and only Jewish Messiah prior to the temple being destroyed. The Old Testament prophets declared He would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2) to a virgin (Isaiah 7:14), be betrayed for thirty pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12-13), die by crucifixion (Psalm 22), and be buried in a rich man’s tomb (Isaiah 53:9). There was only one person who fits all of the messianic prophecies of the Old Testament who lived before A.D. 70: Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of Mary.
Jesus said that He is the only way to the Father. For Christians to say that there are other ways to find peace with God is to bear false testimony. In one sweeping statement, Jesus discards all other religions as a means of finding forgiveness of sins. This agrees with other Scriptures; “Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12), and “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5).
Paige Patterson stated, “it comes down to a question of truth. Every false religious expression is a religion of darkness. That doesn’t mean there are no good things in that faith. But if Jesus is to be taken seriously when He says, “No one comes to the Father but through Me”, every other proposal is one of darkness.”
Religion is man’s attemp to reach God, Christianity (Jesus Christ) is God’s attemp to reach man!
Christianity is not a religion but a relationship with God.
