Let me make something very clear here, it is vitally important for the Christian to be able to look into the mirror and evaluate themselves also. This test is not just for someone who does not claim to be a Christian it is just as important for someone who does call themselves a Christian. Why is that, well it is because you as a true Christian should always be evaluating yourself to make sure you are following God’s will not your own! And even more important to make sure you are a true Christian! There are many people out there who do claim that they are Christian but there lives and their actions do not show this. Be honest with yourself, it means everything!
Paul has just been speaking about the human conscience bearing witness with God’s Law (v. 15). Now he applies the Law to the conscience to bring “the knowledge of sin.” He personalizes the Eighth Commandment: “You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal?” (v. 21). The conscience agrees with the Commandment that it is morally wrong to steal. This is why I find it so beneficial to ask someone who professes to be a “good” person how many lies he thinks he has told in his life. When he says, “Hundreds,” I ask, “What do you call someone who tells lies?” When he answers, “A liar,” he is being shown the personal nature of his sins. Then in v. 22, Paul uses the Seventh Commandment, personalizing it by asking, “Do you commit adultery?” When you take someone through the moral Law, on this Commandment don’t forget to explain that Jesus said if we even look with lust, we commit adultery in our hearts (see Matt. 5:27,28).
Romans 2:21 You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal?
Just a few statistics here. Some of these are going to hard for people to hear and admit. 49 percent of people professing to be Born Again Christians believed that living with someone of the opposite sex without being married was morally okay. It is not! 49 percent were comfortable with enjoying sexual thoughts about someone. Jesus said that whoever looks with lust has already committed adultery in their heart (Matthew 5:27-28). 33 percent thought it was okay to have an abortion (watch 180 video). Even worse 30 percent of pastors had viewed Internet porn in the last 30 days! 41 percent believe that “the Bible, the Koran, and the Book of Mormon are all different expressions of the same spiritual truths. They are not!
So just because you call yourself a Christian, do not be fooled, make sure you are a Born Again Christian, your eternal life depends on it!
Do not fool yourself into thinking that God is so loving that He will never send anyone to Hell. He is loving but He is also just and hates sin. If He is good, then there must be judgment. There is good news with this, let’s take the test:
Do you believe in heaven? Whether you do or not let’s just say that there is a heaven!
If there is a heaven do you think you would be good enough to get there?
So what does the Law have to do with this? Well, the Law we are talking about is God’s Law, it is what you will be judged by when you stand before God. So before we see if you are good enough to get into heaven let’s go ahead and look at sin. Committing sin is breaking the Law of God, so go ahead and head over to the next section “Sin” to continue with this test.
Before you do that, just go ahead and watch the video we mentioned above “180”.
This Week’s Lesson
Using Your Armor
Today we’re going to talk about something that is really directed to a true Christian. In today’s world with so many things going on from the hectic life style of our normal lives, our jobs, kids, and families overall not to mention the threat of war and natural disaster all over the world, we need to be strong!
That is easier said than done. Why is it that so many normal people need medication or counseling help just to cope with today’s world? It is because we are not equipped on our own to deal with these situations, which I might add are our own doing. Not necessarily as individuals but as the human race.
So if we are not equipped to handle these things then what do we do, just give up? No!
Although we as humans really are not able to deal with this life in many aspects, God has given us His Holy Spirit to help strengthen us and lead us through these times. No different than we cannot resist sin on our own, but only through the power of the Holy Spirit. Now you’re saying so why are all these things happening if we all have the Holy Spirit to lead us through? Well, we all do not have the Holy Spirit! You must be a Born Again Christian to have the Holy Spirit within you. Now let me clarify a few things about this, any true Christian is Born Again, but just because someone calls themselves a Christian does not mean they are a true Christian or Born Again. Okay, bottom line is if you are a true Christian then you are Born Again and all true Christians have the Holy Spirit living within them.
The Holy Spirit will provide strength to you so you are able to endure this world with a positive outlook. If you are fearful of the things that are going on in this world you need to question yourself as to whether you are Born Again (Saved) or not. This may be tough but you are instructed to self evaluate yourself on a regular basis, to make sure you are on the correct path. Just because you said a prayer one time, or your family was Christian or you even go to church does not mean you are “Saved”. Look through this site and you will find these answers, I encourage you to do so, it is a very important quest.
So now let’s get back on subject. The Holy Spirit gives us the ability to endure this life’s trials and tribulations. Not only has God given us the Holy Spirit to help us but we also find that God has given us more to help us with this battle. What else has He given us? The Armor of God!
Let’s look at the book of Ephesians in the Bible to get some answers and instructions. First let us look at Ephesians 6:11-12 “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms”.
We can see that our true enemy is not other people but Satan and his dark forces.
We are told to put on the whole armor of God. So what is this armor. It is spiritual! Let’s look at each piece of armor. For that answer we look at Ephesians 6:14-18 “Stand therefore, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, the girdle of truth, and having shod your feet with the shoes of peace; besides all these take the shield of faith, with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”.
This is your armor that God has provided you to help your battle with the darkness and sin of this world. Yes, you are under attack by Satan and his forces every day, even though you may not realize it! If you are not “Saved” then those forces are your allies and they are whispering things in your ear all the time to get you to do what is wrong in God’s eyes, committing sin and therefore breaking the Law of God.
Don’t be misled, Satan does not care about you in the least, his only purpose is your demise by your own choices, and the end result for you is hell. Why does Satan want this? Simple, because your self demise will cause God great pain. He loves you!
So we have established why we need the Armor of God and that it can help us in our daily lives but how do we put it on?
Remember we must put on our armor daily!
First let us put on the Girdle of Truth! You must stand firm in the truth of God’s Word. What is that? The Bible, so you must read and study the Bible everyday without missing a day here and there. When you start to do this and begin learning the Word of God then you can stand firm in the truth of God’s Word. What is that truth? It is that Jesus died for you on the cross, was buried and rose again, there by defeating death and paying for your sin.
Put on the Breastplate of Righteousness! This is your life style. Make sure you are living a righteous life, you will find what that is in the Bible. For the most basic idea it is living for God, you tell the truth, you help people even when you are not asked, you do not live the wild night life. You do not swear or take advantage of people, you live the way God wants you to and you serve and honor Him daily. By doing this you will guard your heart from evil and will flee from temptation and in so doing your heart can remain pure and holy, protected under the blood of Jesus Christ. Do not embrace the things of this world, money, success, fame, power, self indulgence etc., for they are not what is important to God.
Put on the Shoes of Peace! Stand and be an example to others and live in the Good News of the Gospel. What is that Good News? It is that you have eternal life through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ! This is the most joyous thing you could ever be given, so let that “Good News” shine through you and be a light to all you encounter.
Take the Shield of Faith! The shield of faith is simply that, your faith in Jesus Christ! If you have that then you know that nothing can defeat you, and you will be ready for Satan’s attacks on you, which will come and may come often. What do you do, you pray and have faith that “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). So when you feel Satan whispering doubt, denial and deceit at you, you know what to do.
Put on the Helmet of Salvation! When things get tough as they usually do, you have your Helmet of Salvation. This is just that you know that no matter how bad things get you are saved! If you do not know this then you need to search this site and find how you can be sure. When you have salvation you can keep your mind focused on God and not on the things of this world.
Take the Sword of the Spirit! The Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God, the Bible. You need to learn how to use it so you can expose the tempting words of Satan. Memorize passages in the Bible, stories, verses, as much as you can, the more you do this the better you will be at using the Sword of the Spirit!
There you have it, you have just put on the whole armor of God.
You must do this daily, don’t take this lightly, it is of the utmost importance.
I’m going to close by giving you a tool that can help you with this each and every day, and I encourage you to use this every day. Your armor will help keep you strong.
Here is a prayer you can use each day when you get up. This is a prayer from David Jeremiah and Turning Point Ministries called the:
Your warrior prepares for battle.
Today I claim victory over Satan by putting on
the whole armor of God!
I put on the Girdle of Truth!
May I stand firm in the truth of Your Word
so I will not be a victim of Satan’s lies.
I put on the Breastplate of Righteousness!
May it guard my heart from evil
so I will remain pure and holy,
protected under the blood of Jesus Christ.
I put on the Shoes of Peace!
May I stand firm in the Good News of the Gospel
so Your peace will shine through me
and be a light to all I encounter.
I take the Shield of Faith!
May I be ready for Satan’s fiery darts of
doubt, denial and deceit
so I will not be vulnerable to spiritual defeat.
I put on the Helmet of Salvation!
May I keep my mind focused on You
so Satan will not have a stronghold on my thoughts.
I take the Sword of the Spirit!
May the two-edged sword of Your Word
be ready in my hands
so I can expose the temping words of Satan.
By faith your warrior has put on
the whole armor of God!
I am prepared to live this day
in spiritual victory!
