Planning for your Future
Planning for our retirement, it seems that we put a huge amount of effort into planning for our retirement and our financial well being. Whether it is a 401k or some other type of account, a large amount of us have this idea to plan for our future. It’s not a bad idea, but there is something in our future that we should all be planning for but very few of us really have given it much thought.
It’s good to have your financial house in order and it’s okay to be planning for retirement, but what about when you die? No I’m not talking about a will, your funeral expenses or even what you will leave your family? Again those are all good things to do and to set aside for.
What is the one thing that we all have in common when we are talking about planning for our future? Any ideas? Okay, I’m just going to go ahead and say it. Death, we are all going to die, time will take each of us to the grave, and if there was one chance in a million that the Bible’s promise of immortality and threat of damnation is true, we owe it to our good sense just to look into it. We may not know when or how, it may be tomorrow or it may be in 50 years, but 10 out of 10 of us are going to die. So don’t you think we should plan for that! I know I can hear you right now, you still think it sounds like I am talking about funeral planning or something like that. No! In fact I’m talking about where you will spend eternity. Some of you are saying, well I don’t really care or no one knows that, but you would be wrong! You can know. Don’t you think it makes some sense to at least consider this? It is something that will happen, we have already established that. So if you put that much effort into your retirement planning, doesn’t it make sense to at least consider, what if the Bible is right? It certainly does, and that is all I ask is that you consider what if!
With retirement planning you look at what it is you want to do, where you want to live, what level of life you want to live once you have retired and then you determine how much money it will take and you try to figure the best you can (or your financial advisor does) on how long you will live, therefore giving you an idea of how much money you will need to retire. A lot of questions to answer with a lot of unknowns. Remember we do know one thing for sure, we are all going to die.
So, unlike retirement planning with all the different questions, when you are planning for eternity there is only one question. Where do you want to spend it? Remember this, we are all have an immortal soul, and “it is appointed once for a man to die and after that the judgment”. (Hebrews 9:27) It’s a really easy question because there are only two choices. Heaven or Hell. Now I know there are some of you who are saying I don’t believe in either but just remember what if, and so just consider that this may be true, at least for the sake of this discussion.
Just go with me on this, and even if you are someone who does not believe in Heaven or hell let’s just say that there is a Heaven and a hell for this scenario.
Let’s look at our two choices. First let’s take a look at Hell. People have made up a great promotion for Hell’s ad campaign, they make it sound like it would be one big party with an anything goes attitude, and you don’t even need reservations, they will take anyone! Sounds good?
Let’s look at our other choice, Heaven. Again many people have made up things about heaven and what it is going to be like. Some of the ridiculous things about Heaven are it’s a quiet peaceful place where you float around on clouds and is rather boring (not true at all). Now if we look into it to really find out if there is any way we can get an idea of what Heaven is like, we find that there is a collection of 66 books all put into one (the Bible) that talk about what Heaven will be like along with instructions on how to get there. The Bible makes it very clear that no one is to take away or add to it, but some have taken Bible and done just that to fit what they want it to say. So we have to make sure we get the real one, if we want to see what Heaven is really like.
So don’t you think it makes sense to open up a Bible and see for yourself, the answers are all there and much more than just what Heaven will be like, you just have to read it? At the very least that would be the only logical conclusion. Start with the New Testament, but make sure you sit down and read a little each day and you will be amazed at all the answers you will find!
Once you have done this you will find out that the only place you want to stay is Heaven, and definitely not Hell. That is as long as you are honest and truthful with yourself.
Now there is one catch about choosing Heaven, you must have a reservation!
Okay, so you see where this little story is going, so let’s get back to the real truth and take a look at that last statement. You must have a reservation! Can that be true and if so how do you get a reservation to heaven? First, it is true, but let me explain what is meant. Today there is a big movement to teach that everyone will make it to heaven, or that as long as you are good then you go to heaven. If that is the case then shouldn’t the question be what is good and who is good? Well, The law of God gave us the answer to what is good by the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17). Okay you look at the Ten Commandments and say I’m not too bad. But Jesus really gave answers to both these questions when on the sermon on the mount He said that “you have heard that it was said by them of old time, you shall not commit adultery: But I say to you, that if you look at a woman to lust after her you have already committed auderty with her in your heart” (Matthew 5:27-28). He also said that if you hate someone it is the same as murder in God’s eye’s. (Matthew 5:21-22). So it is not just our physical actions but also our mental thoughts!
So your thinking well who then can be good, and Jesus again gave that answer in Matthew chapter 19 when an unnamed man (we usually call the rich young ruler) came and called Jesus “Good Master“, and Jesus said to him, ” Why do you call me good? There is none good but one, that is, God”.
There you have it, we all fail. So how can we get to heaven? God, because He loves us so much took care of that for us, by becoming a man, Jesus Christ and taking our punishment on the cross. Jesus stated “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father but by me” (John 14:6).
So, God has offered us this free gift of eternal life and all we have to do is accept it. So how do we do that? Simply by repenting (changing your ways) and accepting Jesus Christ as your one and only savior, turn your life over to Him and live for Him, you cannot earn this gift it is free from God all you need to do is accept it! Pray to God, and ask His forgiveness, just talk to Him as you would talk to a dear friend.
So go ahead and plan for your financial well being and your retirement but make sure you are planning for your eternal soul!
Don’t forget to ask yourself WHAT IF?
